SOLAR ENERGY

Sun gives the most renewable energy either directly or indirectly. Fortunately, the best thing about sunlight is that it can be captured and converted directly using a wide range of technologies like solar heating, molten salt power plant, and solar architecture, to name a few. Thus, the sunlight and heat from the sun are harnessed to generate solar energy. The conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity can be done either directly by using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly by using artificial photosynthesis, concentrated solar power (CSP), solar architecture, and concentrator photovoltaics (CPV). There are a few different ways to collect and convert solar energy. Solar technologies can be broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they have been captured, converted and distributed as solar energy. The process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic (PV) effect. Solar panels convert the sunlight into usable solar energy using N-type and P-type semiconductor material. Each cell converts the light of the sun into electrical energy, which can then be used to power electrical devices. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. Currently, solar panels convert most of the visible light spectrum and about half of the ultraviolet and infrared light spectrum to usable solar energy. Solar energy technologies use the energy and light of the sun to provide light, heat, electricity, hot water, and even cooling for businesses, industry and homes. The range is from solar water heating with solar collectors or attic cooling with solar attic fans for domestic use to the complex technologies that directly convert sunlight to electrical energy using boilers, mirrors, or photovoltaic cells.
